Federal authorities conducted a raid on Wednesday at the home and office of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, who was chosen in 2021 to lead the second-largest school district in the U.S., with nearly half a million students. Ciaran McEvoy, a spokesperson for the federal prosecutor's office in Los Angeles, confirmed to EFE that authorities are executing a search warrant approved by a judge at Carvalho's home, as well as at the LAUSD headquarters. The spokesperson declined to comment further on the reasons for the FBI agents' raid. Carvalho took the helm of LAUSD in February 2022 with the challenge of getting students back to school after pandemic closures. He has also been a prominent figure in the fight against the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in schools. His extensive experience in education, crisis management, and his story as an immigrant who speaks Spanish have made him very close to the schools of Los Angeles, where the majority of students are of Hispanic origin. Carvalho previously led the Miami-Dade County Public Schools, where his performance was recognized. In 2020, he came under scrutiny from the Miami-Dade school system's inspector general after helping to secure a $1.57 million donation from an online education company for a foundation he oversees, according to the Miami Herald. In June 2021, the inspector general concluded that the donation, intended to benefit teachers, did not violate state or district ethical policies, according to the publication. Photo EFE.
